A land of wild beauty and rich culture, Sumatra is home to lush rainforests, fiery volcanoes, and rare wildlife like orangutans and elephants. Discover adventure and authenticity in one of Indonesia’s most untamed islands. It’s also home to rare species such as orangutans, and elephants, making it a prime destination for eco-tourism and wildlife lovers. Upon arrival at Kuala Namu Airport in Medan, meet your driver and transfer to your hotel.
After breakfast, enjoy a morning tour of Medan’s cultural landmarks, including Maimun Palace, the Grand Mosque, and Vihara Gunung Timur. In the afternoon, travel through North Sumatra’s scenic landscapes on a four-hour drive to Bukit Lawang. Upon arrival, check in to your lodge and relax in the peaceful jungle setting near Gunung Leuser National Park.
Begin with a short walk from your hotel before trekking into Gunung Leuser National Park. Spend around three hours hiking through the rainforest, keeping an eye out for orangutans and other wildlife along the way. Lunch is served during the trek, and by late afternoon, arrive at a riverside camp to enjoy a warm meal and a night surrounded by jungle sounds.
Wake to the calls of gibbons before enjoying an Indonesian breakfast by the river. Then begin a final three-hour trek deeper into the rainforest, with opportunities to spot wildlife along the way. After a packed lunch, end the adventure with a fun 25-minute tube rafting journey down the Bohorok River, returning to your lodge through lush jungle scenery.
Travel to Berastagi, a cool highland town set between Mount Sibayak and Mount Sinabung, with views of dramatic volcanic landscapes along the way. Stop by the local fruit market to sample fresh produce, including the famous Marquisa passion fruit, before visiting Lumbini Park and its replica of the Shwedagon Pagoda. The rest of the day is free to relax at your hotel and unwind.
Begin the day with a climb up Mount Sibayak (2,172 m), an accessible volcano offering crater walks, steaming vents, and panoramic views toward Mount Sinabung. Sunrise hikes require an early start, though visibility depends on weather conditions. Later, travel toward Lake Toba, stopping at Dokan village to see traditional Batak Karo houses, and at Sipiso Piso waterfall. Continue to Parapat and take a 45-minute shared boat ride to Tuktuk village on Samosir Island. Upon arrival, enjoy free time to relax or explore at your own pace.
Enjoy a full-day private cruise on a traditional wooden boat with two scenic stops. Visit Sigapiton valley for a leisurely countryside walk and a chance to connect with the local Batak community. Continue to Binangalom (Situmurun) Waterfall, where water cascades directly into Lake Toba—perfect for a refreshing swim. End the day with a relaxed boat ride back to your hotel.
Padang Sidempuan
After check-out, sail back to Parapat before continuing on a scenic six-hour drive to Padang Sidempuan, an ideal stop between Lake Toba and Bukittinggi. Travel along Lake Toba’s shoreline and through the Bukit Barisan mountains, passing rice terraces, villages, and jungle landscapes. Along the way, visit a family-run pineapple farm, explore Balige’s local market, and unwind at the sulfur hot springs in Sipoholon. End the day with a relaxing evening at your hotel.
Today features the longest drive of the journey, rewarded by ever-changing Sumatra landscapes—mountains, valleys, rivers, rice terraces, and traditional villages. Stop at a small botanical garden to learn about local herbs and spices, and visit Purba Baru’s large Islamic boarding school. In the afternoon, cross the equator at Bonjol village before continuing to Bukittinggi. Arrive by early evening, check in to your hotel, and enjoy free time in this highland town known for its Minangkabau culture and distinctive architecture.
Enjoy a two-hour trek through the dramatic Sianok Canyon, descending from Bukittinggi into a lush valley of rice fields, forest trails, and a flowing river beneath towering cliffs. The walk ends in Koto Gadang, a traditional village known for its fine silverwork. Continue by car to Puncak Lawang for sweeping views over Lake Maninjau before returning to Bukittinggi.
A short drive from Bukittinggi brings you to the starting point of a 20 km cycling journey through mostly flat terrain, passing rice paddies, traditional Rumah Gadang houses, and views of Mount Merapi and Singgalang. Along the way, interact with locals and observe daily village life. After a packed lunch, continue by car to Lembah Harau, a dramatic nature reserve of towering cliffs and rice fields, where you’ll spend the night in a simple hotel surrounded by scenic landscapes.
