We travelled an ambitious 7-night overland road trip from Yogyakarta to Bali that captures the best of Java and Bali. We launched from Yogyakarta, quickly finding Sunrise perfection at Bromo (Night 1), followed by a tranquil, farm-to-table river-side retreat at Kalibaru (Night 2). The itinerary then plunges into the wild interior, with a deep jungle adventure to witness turtle nesting at Sukamade Village (Night 3), before a luxurious mountain resort retreat at the Ijen Resort (Night 4), offering high-altitude relaxation. After a comfortable coastal stop in Banyuwangi (Night 5), we cross to Bali for a true aquatic encounter—snorkeling with dolphins—on the peaceful north coast of Lovina (Night 6), concluding with a final, elegant stop in Sanur (Night 7). This route proves that the greatest journey is often the one that seamlessly connects the wonders of the archipelago.
Bromo's Triumph: Sunrise Secured by Local Expertise
Our 3:00 AM sunrise ascent faced a thick fog threat at the main Penanjakan point. Kekayon’s specialist, Mr. Mahwan, quickly navigated us to the less-crowded Bukit Kingkong, securing a clear and comfortable view. This swift decision resulted in a flawless experience as the sun rose over the majestic peaks. We concluded the morning with an exhilarating horseback ride across the savanna at the green Teletubbies Hill before breakfast, showcasing our partners' invaluable local knowledge.
Villa Kendi Kalibaru: Bespoke Hospitality and Serenity
Following the Bromo adrenaline, Kalibaru was our essential restorative retreat in East Java's lush heartland. Our overnight sanctuary, Villa Kendi Kalibaru, offered a true sanctuary, elevated by the exceptional care of Mrs. Yanti.
The hotel is next to a soothing river in a quiet location near a local village, offering authentic calm mixed with community warmth and the sight of lively village kids. Mrs. Yanti provided bespoke service, ensuring our comfort. She ensured our breakfast was prepared only when we were ready, so every meal was served perfectly warm. The food quality was outstanding due to its freshness: the jam was a delicious home-made delicacy from the property’s own garden, and all vegetables were freshly picked. This dedication to fresh, local cuisine and personalized timing made Villa Kendi a truly memorable and authentic stop.
Off-Road to the Wild Edge: The Conservation Magic of Sukamade
Our journey from Kalibaru to the highly secluded Sukamade Village in Meru Betiri National Park was a true expedition, requiring a five-hour, rugged, off-road jeep trip across rivers and jungle. This challenging travel is key to the experience's exclusivity.
We stayed in an authentic local guesthouse, perfectly situated for our deep jungle immersion. Our expert guide, Mr. Imam, led a nature walk, detailing the delicate ecosystem and its unique flora and fauna. Sukamade offers two profoundly moving, world-class conservation encounters: observing protected giant sea turtles silently coming ashore at night to lay eggs, and the next morning, participating in the joyous release of newly hatched baby turtles instinctively scrambling toward the ocean.
Ijen Resort: High-Altitude Serenity and Well-Deserved Rest
After the intense adventures of Bromo and Sukamade, our itinerary pivoted to luxurious recovery. For our Ijen stay, the magnificent Ijen Resort was chosen, transforming the destination from a physical feat to an elevated retreat. Positioned high in the cool mountain air, the resort offers stunning, expansive views and impeccable service—a true sanctuary.
This stop was a high-value interlude for recharging. We spent the day immersed in the serene atmosphere, enjoying the cool climate and first-class amenities. This moment of pure relaxation underscored Kekayon's freedom and flexibility, prioritizing ultimate comfort and well-being, ensuring travelers are refreshed for the next chapter.
Bali Beckons: Dolphin Snorkeling and the Perfect Finale
Our Java journey ended in Banyuwangi (Night 5), a perfect launchpad for the Bali ferry. Arriving in Bali, we settled into stylish coastal stays. At The Lovina (Night 6) on the quiet north coast, we had a unique aquatic experience. Guided by Mr. Edi (Edi Popeye) on his boat, Popeye, a scenic hour-long sail led us to hundreds of dolphins. Swimming alongside these playful creatures was an intimate highlight, connecting us deeply with Bali's natural treasures.
Our excellent Bali driver, Mr. Ferdi, handled the transition to our final stop. En route to Sanur, the two-hour scenic drive from Lovina included a cultural break at Taman Ayun Temple.
Our final destination was the elegant Artotel Sanur (Night 7). This beachfront stay was the perfect conclusion to our 7-night road trip. We enjoyed the gentle waves and the beautiful sunrise, celebrating the journey from Bromo's volcanic ash to Lovina's clear waters. This expedition proved Indonesia's beauty is best experienced by traveling the distance in comfort, style, and with the best local expertise, ready for our early flight back to Yogyakarta.
This journey is a curated collection of peak moments, proving the distance between Java's volcanoes and Bali's beaches is best measured in discovery, comfort, and profound memories. We invite you to experience this definitive adventure.
