Embarked on a comprehensive inspection and product discovery trip to Bali and Lombok, focusing on destinations that represent the best of sustainable tourism in Indonesia covered Muntigunung Bali, Sire Lombok, and Tetebatu Lombok—three locations known for community empowerment, natural beauty, and meaningful cultural experiences.

Exploring Tulamben and Amed – A Quiet Coastal Start

After landing at Denpasar International Airport (DPS), I made my way to Mimpi Tulamben Resort for an overnight stay. The surrounding Amed area, with its peaceful coastline and laid-back atmosphere, offered a gentle beginning before heading toward the highlands of Muntigunung.

Muntigunung Bali – A Leading Model of Community-Based Tourism

The following morning, I met with Pak Pande Pica and Pak Tjokorda from the Muntigunung Foundation, an organization dedicated to empowering local communities in one of Bali’s most remote regions. Historically, Muntigunung faced severe water shortages—residents had to trek steep hills to reach Lake Batur just to collect clean water.

Our journey from Tulamben to Bukit Alengkong showcased dramatic landscapes and panoramic views of northeastern Bali. A short 15-minute trek from the parking area brought us to the summit, where I enjoyed fresh fruit while admiring the calm, striking scenery of Lake Batur below.

The visit continued with on-site inspections of community-run production centers, including:

-Basket weaving workshops

-Hammock production

-Batik crafting

-Cashew nut processing

These activities highlighted why Muntigunung tours are increasingly recognized for authentic cultural encounters and responsible travel. The hospitality of the local residents was exceptional and remains a strong foundation for high-quality guest experiences.

Sire Lombok – Hotel Tugu Lombok

From Bali, the journey continued to Sire Beach, Lombok, where I inspected the renowned Hotel Tugu Lombok together with Pak Ardian. The property stands out for its cultural heritage, artistic architecture, and peaceful ambience ideal for long-stay travelers.

The hotel features:

-A private white-sand beach

-Calm waters suitable for swimming

-Views overlooking Gili Air

-Immersive cultural touches throughout the property

This inspection confirmed Hotel Tugu Lombok as a strong recommendation for guests seeking a luxury cultural resort in Lombok.

Tetebatu Lombok – Trekking Through Rice Terraces and Forests

The final portion of the journey took me to Tetebatu, a village celebrated for its terraced rice fields and natural serenity. Accompanied by Pak Wayan, I completed a 3–4-hour trek through lush landscapes that reflect the charm of rural Lombok.

The highlight came unexpectedly: spotting a group of black monkeys jumping among the trees—an unforgettable moment that underscores Tetebatu’s rich biodiversity. This area remains a prime destination for travelers interested in eco-tourism and scenic trekking in Lombok.

This inspection trip provided crucial insights into the destinations and partners we rely on for delivering high-quality, meaningful travel experiences.
