Indonesia’s Oldest Botanical Garden and a Scientific Treasure

Bogor Botanical Garden is one of Indonesia’s most historic and beautiful natural landmarks. Only 1.5 hours from Jakarta, it offers a refreshing escape from the busy capital. More importantly, it plays a crucial role in Indonesia’s scientific development. Founded on May 18, 1817, by German botanist Dr. C.G.C. Reinwardt, it is recognized as the oldest botanical garden in Southeast Asia.

A Smooth and Comfortable Journey from Jakarta

Our trip from Jakarta was made easy thanks to Mr. Stephen, our reliable driver in the Jakarta area. After passing through the toll road, we arrived directly at the garden’s entrance. What impressed me immediately was how central the garden is—right in the middle of Bogor city—yet it feels worlds away from the busy streets of West Java.

An Iconic Landmark: Bogor Presidential Palace

Inside the garden lies the Istana Kepresidenan Bogor (Bogor Presidential Palace). Although it is not open to the public and is guarded by soldiers, admiring it from outside offers a glimpse into Indonesia’s political and historical legacy. The current president often visits and stays here, adding cultural importance to the visit.

Experiencing the Garden on an E-Scooter

Visitors can explore the garden in various ways—walking, renting a bicycle, using a golf cart, or hopping on a shuttle bus. I chose to rent an E-scooter, and it turned out to be one of the best decisions. It allowed me to glide effortlessly through the enormous landscape and stop at several fascinating highlights, including:

• Wide roads lined with ancient trees

• Orchid houses full of vibrant colors

• Themed botanical zones

• Serene ponds and shaded corners

• Zoologi Museum, showcasing Indonesia’s rich biodiversity

• Lady Raffles Monument, a historical landmark within the garden

• Nepenthes Garden, home to Indonesia’s iconic pitcher plants

The combination of refreshing breeze, quiet pathways, and diverse natural features made the experience truly unforgettable.
